  • Resumen
    • This thesis aims to take advance of the slowdown of the construction sector in recent years, in order to achieve a qualitative leap in the design and implement system of the vertical grids in multifamily residential buildings in Catalonia at the present time and with the available technology. The main objective of this doctoral thesis is divided into two steps: first, to determine whether it is feasible to reverse the current craftsmanship of the spinal column of the buildings and, second, to set the design bases towards a `facility core¿ industrialization. Previously, it has been necessary to analyse the evolution of the spinal column over time, and to develop a flows characterization of the flows around typological and regulations changes in multifamily buildings. Th thesis deduces, it was determined that the `facility core¿ has to be a disruptive component which approach extending beyond industrialisation of spinal column, to respond to the current social and environmental claims: (1) improving the environmental performance building, (2) increasing the versatility, flexibility and quality of the spinal column of the building, and (3) eliminating the maintenance inconvenience of replacement facilities tasks during the operation phase of the building. In order to encourage the industry interest to materialise this product as well as make it attractive for technicians, installers and users; a strategy has been designed based on four drivers of change which make the conception of the `facility core¿ as a holistic element: (1) one single element with different `flow channels¿ rather than an amount of small elements; (2) a modular element marketable through a tightened brochure but enough wide to suit most of building designs; (3) an element that establishes a centralized system and improves economic and environmental performance life cycle of the building; and (4) a high durability element that takes advantage of the intrinsic benefits industrialized products. The culmination of this study is the design of a prototype of ultra high performance concrete which proves that technology and market are ready for aim the `facility core¿.
