Resumen de Profiting from collaborative and organizational innovation practices: a research through case estudies and quantitative analysis

Paula Anzola

  • This research covers a wide range of innovatíon practíces, and intends to advance the understanding of how to better profit from theír implementation, taking into account contextual factors and the potential effects of their joint adoption. In particular, the studies presented here del ve into the ímplementatíon and effects of in-house R&D&I practíces, collaborative R&D&I activities developed wíth the participation of externa] agents, and organizational innovation practicas. In order to do so, the thesis adopts a comprehensive approach that encompasses the complexity of these Ílmovative processes and the dí verse range of contingencies affecting them, Therefore, the research is conducted through both qualitative and quantitative methods. lndeed, the case study methodology applied in the first stage ofthe investígation helps to define and formulate the research questions for the second stage, whose analysis is conducted through the estímation of causal models, and implies an interpretation of the results by means of calculating average marginal effects. The conclusions from the frrst qualitative study híghlight the relevan ce of the implementation of organizational ínnovation practices for value generation in firrns, suggesting that organízational ínnovations a!Jow for better exploitation of the results oftechnologícal innovation practices. The thírd study tests these conclusions through a quantitative analysís, providing evidence ofthe complementary effect oftechnological (be it interna! or collaboratíve) and organizational innovation practices when pursuing the generation of complex technological innovations (both product and process innovations). Toe multiple case study presented in chapter two results in the proposal of a theoretical framework on how organizational context factors inlluence the profiting of collaborative innovation practices along !he stages ofthe process. Also with purposes ofbetter understanding how firms may profit from collaborative innovation practices, takíng into account the potentíal inlluence of strategíc decisions and interna! context contíngencies, tbe study described in ehapter four presents a quantitative analysis on the causal effects on innovative performance of technological proxímíty and the íntensity of collaboration in different stages of !he process. The evidence found here suggests that finns should try to collaborate intensely wíth technologícally proximate partners, and pay attentíon to proper protection mechanisms, especially when collaborating in the later stages ofthe innovation process.
