Resumen de La dimensión social del espacio en rogelio salmona

Chiara Pia Granzotto

  • The objective of this doctoral thesis, is to elucidate the social dimension of space in the architectural works of Colombian architect, Rogelio Salmona. For such analisis, interdisciplinary and inclusive methods were necessary. Because of this, its important to understand the author´s motivation when the time came to develope its theorical framework. Conscious of its thematical difficulty -by its extensive approach- the content acquires certain brush strokes, that do not wish to distance the reader from the fact that this is an architectural doctoral thesis, but in the same parallel and paradoxical manner, it would be impossible to talk about the social dimensions of space by excluding other nuances that directly collaborate in its complementation and embellishment; and without whom, such analisis would result reduced to its minimal expression, - one demiddled- and limited to a resonating and rhetorical architectural description. To encompass such plurality, this thesis is divided in three chapters: Memory, Identity and Avant-garde. These chapters respond each to the three critical phases in the creative architectural process that wishes to denote poetical spaciality: pre-figuration (or a purposed dialogue with memory), con-figuration (or a purposed dialogue with place) and re-figuration, which finally offers that re-created poetry, that avant-garde note to architectural spatiality.

The architectural works of Rogelio Salmona are clear, contemporary examples of a specific modernity. An architectural language that responds to a specifical context, at a specifical time. Being conscioussly aware that architecture carries time as a spinal bifidal cord, this thesis focuses on what time really is, and what role does time play in architecture. In the first chapter, the methodological stream encompasses a thoroughgoing study of time, between Cronos and Kairós and how each affects human beings in different and diverse scales. During Ricoeur´s attempts to combine phenomenological descriptions with hermeneutical interpretations, he proposed the concept of a just memory. Pre-figuration emerges from any trace found in time´s mnemonic passing. This can also be understood as an identitary construction who´s discourse, has to include the passing through oblivion. Such analisis must engage cultural memory and territory. Which leads the reader to chapter two, Identity, where specifical contexts are elucidated; and how Rogelio Salmona through his architectural purposals, heightens them. Specifical contexts are observed; the processes of latin american identity versus its dissolution in the globalized world are also obeserved. Within the dialogue between Memory (Pre-figuration/ Reconaissance) and Identity (Con-figuration/ Place) one can expect a poetical architectural Re-figuration, that contains and promotes social dimensions of space. In the third chapter, Avant-garde, Rogelio Salmona´s works are analized by including and encompassing all other observations of previous chapters. In this research, the equation, reconaissance + place = poetical re-creation is solidified. Its importance is established for specifical dialogical purposes between human beings and architecture, and their need for strong affectional, and spatial foothold recreations. For this reason, in all the architectural works analized; phenomenological itineraries, kinetical experiences, both positional and temporal, were studied. As well as their architectural compositions and landscape contributions of place were observed. In this continuos dialogy between inflections of memory´s, identity´s and avant-garde´s notes, human beings are invited to immerse themselves into the internal discourse that lies within. The one which measures the experience of time, it´s most important dimension. It also offers answers to the discourse between human´s onthological denominator and specific cultures, transforming a local poetical act, into an universal one.
