La presente tesis doctoral plantea el estudio iconográfico de la sociedad sevillana del siglo XIX y las primeras décadas del XX a través de las escenas de interior. Poniendo especial énfasis en el periodo comprendido entre la Revolución de Septiembre y la Restauración alfonsina (1868-1931), mostramos las temáticas relativas a la vida doméstica, la vida pública y el universo del trabajo, encabezadas por un capítulo dedicado a la creación artística de la era romántica, diferente en propósito y forma a la producción realista de la segunda mitad de la centuria, pero indisolublemente ligada a ésta. La investigación incluye, con un cierto carácter catalográfico, una selección de obras representativas de la sociedad del momento. En ella se traza una perspectiva que engloba la realidad de todos los estratos sociales, sorteándose así la tradicional óptica elitista que se proyecta en los trabajos publicados en nuestro país hasta la fecha. Se analiza también la pintura de interiores cultivada por los pintores formados en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel en el marco español y foráneo (Italia, Francia, Argentina, México…) y se enfocan de un modo original los conocimientos sobre la cotidianidad, la intimidad, la sociabilidad, la mentalidad y las costumbres de la Sevilla decimonónica, incidiéndose en la intrahistoria de ésta. Se proponen materias de actualidad como la historia de las mujeres, la historia de género, contribuyendo, asimismo, una visión novedosa de la historia socio-cultural, artística, etnográfica, religiosa, antropológica… que toma como fundamento el repertorio pictórico y sus interconexiones con la producción literaria.

This doctoral thesis presents the iconographic study of Sevillian society in the nineteenth century as well as the first decades of twentieth century through interior scenes. Putting the emphasis in the period between the Revolution of September and the Alphonsine Restoration (1868-1931), subjects related to domestic and public life and the world of work are shown. These subjects are headed by an in-depth chapter on the romantic era’s artistic creation, which was different, both in purpose and form, from the realistic production of the second half of the century, but linked to this one. The research includes, with a certain catalographic nature, a selection of representative works of the society of the time. It draws a perspective that encompasses the reality of all social classes, thereby avoiding the traditional and elitist standpoint that we can see projected in the works published in our country to this day. Inside painting of painters formed in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Saint Isabel of Hungary within the Spanish and foreign framework (Italy, France, Argentina, Mexico…) is analysed too. Furthermore, the knowledge about everyday life, privacy, mentality, and customs and traditions of Seville in the nineteenth century is approached in an original way, with emphasis on its intrahistory. Current topics such as women’s history, gender history are proposed, thus providing a refreshing vision of the socio-cultural, artistic, ethnographic, religious, anthropological history... which takes as a basis the pictorial repertoire and its interconnections with the literary production.
