Resumen de Depresión y calidad de vida en pacientes con diabetes mellitus

Mónica Carreira Soler

  • Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic diseases that could compromise an individual's functioning in all aspects of his life (physical, psychological and social). Diabetes is a disease with high psychiatric comorbidity, however, the only condition that increases their prevalence for the general population is depression. The presence of depression in patients with diabetes has major implications for its relationship with the complications of diabetes, glycemic control and adherence to treatment, leading to poorer physical and mental functioning, poorer quality of life and an increase in healthcare costs in patients with depression and diabetes. The negative consequences of depression in people with diabetes could be prevented and eliminated with proper treatment, being necessary to detect this condition through proper evaluation. However, only 25% of people with diabetes who have depression are identified. The type of assessment tool, the sample used and the similarities between symptoms of depression and the symptoms of diabetes are some of the causes of an inadequate evaluation. Against this background, the scale of depression in diabetes was created to identify depressive symptoms in patients with type 1 diabetes. However, following the creation of this scale it was necessary to continue the research work. For these reasons, in this thesis one of the main objectives is to continue the study of the assessment of depression in patients with diabetes for a short blanching scale DDI-45 (Diabetes Depression Scale), validate its application in patients with type 2 diabetes and discuss its possible application to English speakers. To address this objective we have designed three studies (Studies 1, 2 and 3). Moreover, given the importance of depression in diabetes and its implications for health and quality of life of patients with diabetes, in this thesis, the second main objective that has emerged is to continue the analysis of the relationship between diabetes, depression, quality of life, making a descriptive study that analyzes the relationship between these variables and the association with other factors listed in the previous literature. Study 4 fulfills the second overall objective.
