    A importância e a antiguidade dos documentos sacerdotais fazem dos documentos do colégio dos feciais a fonte mais segura para o estudo das relações externas da Roma antiga no âmbito do ius fetiale. A impossibilidade de consulta direta dos documentos do colégio dos feciais obriga, porém, a coleta de material que forneça informações para conhecer as normas aplicadas por aqueles sacerdotes. A análise direta das fontes que tratam das normas relativas ao ius fetiale implica um método que permita valorar seus diversos aspectos, considerando: a distinção entre informação de caráter jurídico (dato giuridico) e informação de caráter histórico (dato storico); a diferenciação entre os tipos de autores e os tipos de obras; a especificação do conteúdo das fontes como fragmentos e "paráfrases" dos documentos dos feciais; e a classificação dos fragmentos segundo o conteúdo dos dois principais tipos de documentos sacerdotais: libri e commentarii. O resultado da aplicação do método evidencia a importância da obra de Tito Lívio no estudo do ius fetiale, apresentando uma visão histórica que busca legitimar o "imperium dos romanos", mediante a plena realização dos institutos aplicados pelos feciais.

    The importance and the antiquity of the priestly documents make the documents from the fetial college the safest source for the study of foreign relations in ancient Rome under the scope of ius fetiale. The impossibility of direct consultation of the documents from the fetial college, however, forces us to gather material that provides information to learn of the rules used by those priests. Direct analysis of the sources that deal with the rules relating to ius fetiale implies a method that allows us to value its diverse aspects, considering: the distinction between information with a legal nature (dato giuridico) and information of a historical nature (dato storico);

    the differentiation among the types of authors and types of works; the specification of the content of the sources as fragments and "paraphrases" of the fetial documents; and the classification of the fragments according to the content of the two principal types of priestly documents: libri and commentarii. The result of the application of the method shows the importance of the work of Tito Lívio in the study on ius fetiale, presenting a historical vision that seeks to legitimize the Roman "imperium", through the full realization of the institutes use by the fetials.
