El análisis historiográfico muestra que la codificación léxica y gramatical de los nombres que designan personas ha experimentado un profundo reajuste en la época contemporánea. Hasta mediados del siglo XIX se asume que el sustantivo, a diferencia del adjetivo, es invariable a la flexión de género. Durante siglos, las terminaciones de género del sustantivo se interpretaron como desinencias derivativas. En contraste con el género flexivo del adjetivo, el género derivativo forma nuevas unidades léxicas que se registran en entradas diferentes del diccionario.
The historiographical analysis shows that the lexical and grammatical codification of nouns designating persons has experimented a deep readjustment in the contemporary era. It is assumed, until the middle of the 19th Century, that the substantive, unlike the adjective, is invariable to gender inflection. For many centuries, gender endings of the substantive were interpreted as derivative endings. In contrast to the inflectional gender of the adjective, the derivative gender creates new lexical units registered as different dictionary entries.
