  • The Bicentennial of theIndependence of Peru finds us in a context of crisis evidencing the need of aprofound reflection on our history and evolution as a republic. However, apartfrom recognizing our weaknesses throughout history, it is also important torecognize what has been done right and who has left or continues leaving apositive mark on our path as a country.In 2010, Universidad Peruana deCiencias Aplicadas (UPC) invited renowned professionals and intellectuals ofdifferent generations and ideologies to write about twenty illustriousPeruvians whose edifying biographies and ideas have guided and marked thecountry's history in different fields. Today, these essays are being publishedagain, adding five more authors and five more personalities. As a result, 25 peruanos delsiglo XX is now out for readers.The personalities, whose lives aredepicted in this book, are Manuel González Prada, Julio C. Tello, FranciscoGarcía Calderón, Víctor Andrés Belaunde, José de la Riva-Agüero y Osma, CésarVallejo, Honorio Delgado, José Luis Bustamante y Rivero, Pedro G. Beltrán, JoséCarlos Mariátegui, Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre, Raúl Porras Barrenechea, LuisAlberto Sánchez, Jorge Basadre, Doris Gibson, José María Arguedas, FernandoBelaunde Terry, José Abelardo Quiñones Gonzales, Luis Bedoya Reyes, JavierPérez de Cuéllar, Fernando de Szyszlo, Blanca Varela, Tilsa Tsuchiya, LuisBanchero Rossi and Mario Vargas Llosa.
