Este artículo presenta la hipótesis de que los vocablos ingleses work y job, tal y como se utilizan en los Estados Unidos, son cultural y lingüísticamente diferentes de los términos españoles trabajar y trabajo. La traducción literal es incapaz de reflejar la pluralidad semántica que abarcan dichos conceptos en la sociedad norteamericana y su significado es frecuentemente malinterpretado por el hispanohablante peninsular. El artículo analizará la falta de equivalencia cognitiva desde la etnolingüística, la lexicografía y la paremiología a fin de ilustrar su diferente conceptualización en la psique cultural de ambos grupos de hablantes

This paper presents the hypothesis that the English words work and job, as used in the United States, are both culturally and linguistically different to the Spanish trabajar and trabajo. The literal translation cannot possibly reflect the semantic plurality of these concepts in the American society and they tend to be misunderstood by the Spanish speaker. Their lack of cognitive equivalence will be analysed from an ethno linguistic and lexicographic point of view, and the study of proverbs will also be used to illustrate their different conceptualisation within the cultural psyche of each group of speakers.
