  D. Frei Francisco dos Mártires was consecrated archbishop of Goa in 1636. He lived between the Iberian Union and the acclamation of D. João IV, having also assumed the functions of temporal governor in the Estado da Índia (1651-1652). As archbishop, he showed great concern for the organization and establishment of agents (and institutions) in the diocesan territory, namely, through the erection of churches and the creation of confraternities, as well as in the surveillance and control of the spaces of his diocese, having personally visited the churches of the North, in 1646. He took care of the practice of cults and religious festivities, as well as the good conduct, both of clergy and laity.Based on documentation found in the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (Lisbon), in comparison with codices from the National Library of Portugal (Lisbon) and the Mitras Lusitanas no Oriente, by Casimiro Cristóvão Nazareth (1887), this proposal asks how, with what means and through what structures did this archbishop make decisions, govern and deal with disputes that arose in the archdio-cese of Goa, between agents, institutions and different powers, during his archi-episcopal government (1636-1652). Based on this premise, using an analytical methodology that combines a micro attentive look at the moving stories, with perspectives of the global turn, the analysis seeks to respond to three main objectives. First of all, to understand what its performance translated into, in practice, considering the mechanisms it used, vicissitudes and advantages. Second, to access the (dis)connections with other powers established in loco, but also in the metropolis. And, finally, articulating the two previous points, it aims to clarify the impact of some profound conjunctural changes, such as the end of integration in the Hispanic Monarchy, the Dutch presence in those territories and the echoes of the creation and action of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide, in its episcopal performance, which support the idea of «an archbishop in a time of change».

  D. Frei Francisco dos Mártires foi sagrado arcebispo de Goa, em 1636. Viveu entre a União Ibérica e a aclamação de D. João IV, tendo assumido também funções de governador temporal do Estado da Índia (1651-1652). Enquanto arcebispo, demonstrou grande preocupação para com a organização e implantação de agentes (e instituições) no território diocesano, nomeadamente, através da ereção de igrejas e da criação de confrarias, bem como na vigilância e controlo dos espaços da sua diocese, tendo, visitado pessoalmente as igrejas do Norte, em 1646. Zelou pela prática de cultos e festividades religiosas, bem como pela boa conduta, tanto de clérigos como de leigos. A partir de documentação que se encontra no Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (Lisboa), em confronto com códices da Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (Lisboa) e as Mitras Lusitanas no Oriente, de Casimiro Cristóvão Nazareth (1887), a presente proposta indaga de que modo, com que meios e atra-vés de que estruturas este arcebispo tomou decisões, governou e tratou conten-das que surgiram na arquidiocese de Goa, entre agentes, instituições e poderes distintos, durante o seu governo arquiepiscopal (1636-1652). A partir desta premissa, recorrendo a metodologia analítica que combina um olhar micro atento às moving stories, com perspetivas do global turn, a análise procura responder a três objetivos principais. Em primeiro lugar, compreender em que se traduziu, na prática, a sua atuação, considerando os mecanismos de que se serviu, vicissitudes e vantagens. Em segundo, aferir feixes de (des)conexão com outros poderes in loco, mas também na metrópole. E, por fim, articulando os dois pontos anteriores, visa esclarecer o impacto de algumas alterações conjunturais profundas, como o fim da integração na Monarquia Hispânica, a presença holandesa naqueles territórios e os ecos da criação e ação da Congregação da Propaganda Fide, no seu desempenho episcopal, que sustentam o ideia de «um arcebispo em tempo de mudança»
