Resumen de El Eclipse Solar De 1867: Ciencia, Política Y Religión En El Chile Republicano

  Este trabajo analiza la observación del eclipse solar del 29 de agosto de 1867 en Curicó, desde una perspectiva que considera el contexto científico, político y religioso de Chile a mediados del siglo XIX, es decir, desde una mirada que comprende a la ciencia como un proceso vinculado plenamente con la sociedad (Shapin; Schaffer; Latour). En este artículo se estudian los aspectos centrales de este “proceso”, enfocándose, por una parte, en el informe científico del jesuita y astrónomo Enrique Cappelletti y, por otra, en la crónica periodística de José Victorino Lastarria, lo que se complementa con la revisión de prensa diaria de los días inmediatamente posteriores al eclipse, para rastrear los modos en que fue comprendido el fenómeno astronómico no solo por expertos de la ciencia, sino también por los públicos de esta. La pregunta central del trabajo consiste en resolver en qué medida la generación de conocimiento astronómico se vincula con situaciones que van más allá de la observación y experimentación en sí, y en relación a esto último, cómo se le atribuyen nuevos significados extra-científicos a las prácticas y conocimientos astronómicos en el contexto estudiado.Palabras clave: Astronomía, política, religión, Chile, siglo XIX.

  This work analyzes the observation of the solar eclipse of August 29, 1867 in Curicó, from a perspective that considers the scientific, political and religious context of Chile in the middle of the 19th century, that is, from a perspective that understands science as a process fully related to society (Shapin, Schaffer, Latour). This article studies the central aspects of this “process”, focusing, on the one hand, on the scientific report of the jesuit and astronomer Enrique Cappelletti and, on the other, on the journalistic chronicle of José Victorino Lastarria, which is complemented by the review of daily press of the days immediately following the eclipse, to trace the ways in which the astronomical phenomenon was understood not only by experts in science, but also by the audiences of this. The central question of the work is to resolve to what extent the generation of astronomical knowledge is linked to situations that go beyond observation and experimentation itself, and in relation to this, how new extra-scientific meanings are attributed to the astronomical practices and knowledge in the context studied.Key words: Astronomy, politics, religion, Chile, 19 th Century.
