Yan Zheng, Duan Chen

  • The present study aims to examine the effects of using Fujian Palace Temple Murals as visual literacy aids in the field of arts education in China. This study investigates the function of cultural objects in contemporary pedagogy and examines their impact on student involvement, acknowledging their significant value. The study focuses on investigating the potential role of time of exposure as a mediator, as well as the moderating effects of student-student and student-teacher interaction, in the link between these murals and student engagement. A quantitative research design was utilized to collect data from a sample of 289 arts students enrolled in several universities and colleges located in Beijing, China. The researchers presented a standardized questionnaire to the individuals and subsequently assessed their responses using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The utilization of a rigorous approach enabled a thorough investigation of the connections between crucial variables, employing well-established research techniques that are appropriate for intricate models featuring latent constructs. The findings indicate that the Fujian Palace Temple Murals have a notable and beneficial influence on student participation within the realm of arts education. Although the duration of exposure did not operate as a mediator in this relationship, it was shown that interactions between students and between students and teachers played significant moderating roles. The aforementioned findings highlight the potential of incorporating cultural objects into educational settings, hence stressing the significance of social interactions in the context of multimedia-enhanced learning. This study makes a valuable contribution to the ongoing discussion surrounding pedagogical innovation and provides practical insights for educators who aim to enhance student learning experiences through the utilization of culturally relevant materials.
