  • Resumen
    • The Sant' Arcangelo Basin is a Pliocene-Pleistocene intramontane basin; it is located near the outer margin of the Apennines thrust belt (Figure 1A) west of the Bradanic trough (southern Italy) (Figure 1B, C). The latter is a northwest-southeast elongated basin representing the southern part of the Pliocene-Pleistocene Apennines foredeep. The Apennines thrust belt is aneast-verging accretionary wedge made up of deformedMesozoic and Tertiary units (Ippolito et al., 1975). The outer front of the belt is buried beneath the sediments of the Bradanic trough (Figure 1D). The eastern margin o fthe Bradanic trough is represented by the Apulian foreland, part of the Adriatic foreland.Turco and Malito (1988) and Turco et a1. (1990)believed the Sant'Arcangelo Basin developed during the Pliocene in pull-apart conditions. On the contrary,Caldara et a1. (1988), Roure et a1. (1988), and Hippolyteet a1. (1991) defined the basin as a piggyback basin. Development occurred on the inner front of the lastallochthonous Apennines thrust sheet since the late Pliocene. According to Pieri et a1. (1996), the basinoriginated as an open piggyback basin bounded to the west and south by Apennines relief and partially separatedto the east-northeast from the most extensive foredeep area by a submerged ridge (2 in Figure 1C).Overall basin-fill is siliciclastic and some thousands of meters thick (Mostardini and Merlini, 1986); theexposed sequences (Vezzani, 1967; Lentini and Vezzani,1974) are essentially interpreted as fluvio-deltaicsystems strongly controlled by synsedimentary tectonicactivity (Caldara et al., 198.8; Pieri et al., 1994;Mutti et al., 1996; Vitale, 1996). In the northern part ofthe basin, Pieri et a1. (1996)
