“Me salí con la mía”: Semblanza biográfico-intelectual de un eleuterófilo.

    El artículo pretende un análisis de la obra de Escohotado desde la perspectiva de su pasión por la libertad. Esta pasión reúne en nuestro autor características tan peculiares, incondicionales y vertebradoras que exige ser nombrada con un neologismo: eleuterofilia.

    Su eleuterofilia se retroalimenta de tres afluentes: el aprecio a la realidad, al conocimiento y al amor. Recorrerlos en su obra constituye el eje central del artículo: a) El apego a lo real le hizo desdeñar el ensueño, la idealización y la utopía, preliminares habituales de las peores crueldades, así como a hallar en el espíritu comercial la clave efectiva para el desarrollo económico (y las virtudes civilizatorias que lleva aparejadas); b) El amor a la verdad ‒corolario inevitable del amor a la realidad‒ le llevó continuamente a actitudes de indudable coraje a despecho de las consecuencias. Siempre expresó con elocuencia la profunda felicidad que, para él, suponía aprender; c) Por último, siempre pensó la razón práctica en clave cordial: como autonomía (frente a cualquier coacción) y amor propio (de donde brota el rechazo a someterse y a someter, y también el deber de ser socialmente útil a los demás). Por eso defendía el legado liberal de Occidente, que es donde el proyecto del individuo solidario, del me rebelo, luego somos, ha arraigado más y mejor.

    Esta concepción de libertad triplemente articulada halló además la más conveniente concreción en su propia vida. Y quizás esta sea su más estimable enseñanza: cuida de la libertad y la felicidad se dará sola.

    The article aims to analyze Escohotado's work from the perspective of his passion for freedom. This passion provides the author with such peculiar, unconditional and structuring characteristics that it demands to be named with a neologism: eleutherophilia.

    His eleutherophilia is nourished by three tributaries: the appreciation of reality, knowledge and love. Exploring them in his work constitutes the central axis of the article: a) The attachment to reality made him disdain the dream, the idealization and the utopia, usual preliminaries of the worst cruelties, as well as to find in the commercial spirit the effective key for economic development (and the civilizing virtues that it entails); b) The love of truth‒ an inevitable corollary of the love of reality ‒led him continuously to attitudes of undeniable courage despite the consequences. He always expressed eloquently the profound happiness that learning meant for him; c) Finally, he always considered practical reason in a cordial key: as autonomy (against any coercion) and self-love (from which springs the rejection of submitting and subjugating, and also the duty of being socially useful to others). That is why he defended the liberal legacy of the Western world, which is where the project of the solidary individual, of the I rebel, therefore we are, has taken root more and better.

    This triple-articulated conception of freedom also found the most convenient embodiment in his own life. And perhaps this is his most valuable teaching: take care of freedom and happiness will happen on its own.
