    Entre el 1º y el 6 de noviembre de 1938 se celebró en Montevideo el III Congreso Eucarístico Nacional, uno de los eventos multitudinarios más significativos que el catolicismo uruguayo organizó en la primera mitad del siglo XX. A contramano de lo que podría suponerse en un país en donde la visión laicista ha sido la preponderante, más de trescientas mil personas salieron a las calles a expresar su devoción por el «Jesús Sacramentado». El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las características de dicho congreso y en especial la participación popular, a través de las imágenes que contiene El Gran Álbum Gráfico Cronológico del III Congreso Eucarístico Nacional del Uruguay. El mismo fue confeccionado a pedido de Acción Católica para conmemorar dicho evento. El material gráfico expresa al menos dos intencionalidades: dimensionar para la posteridad la magnificencia del congreso y dar cuenta que la Iglesia Católica, en un país que afianzaba cada vez más su identidad laica, aún se mantenía en vigencia y, su capital, Montevideo, podía aún ser presentada como la «ciudad de Dios»

    Between November 1st and 6th, 1938, the III National Eucharistic Congress was held in Montevideo, one of the most significant mass events organized by Uruguayan Catholicism in the first half of the 20th century. Contrary to what be supposed in a country where the secularist vision has been predominant, more than three hundred thousand people went to the streets to express their devotion to the “Jesús Sacramentado”. The aim of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of this congress and especially the popular participation, through the images contained in “The Great Chronological Graphic Album of the III National Eucharistic Congress of Uruguay”. It was made at the request of Acción Católica to commemorate the event. The graphic material expresses at least, two intentions: to dimension for posterity the magnificence of the congress and to illustrate that the Catholic Church, in a country that increasingly strengthened its secular identity, was still alive and its capital, Montevideo, could still be presented as the “city of God”.
