In recent years it has been argued that the Hispanic Society’s anonymous painting The Family of Philip II commemorated the betrothal between the infanta Catalina Micaela of Austria and Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy. However, the discovery of unpublished documentation in the Archive of the Royal Palace, as well as a review of the chronicles of the oath to the Prince of Asturias in 1584, belie this theory; enabling us to understand what the true meaning of the scene depicted could be.
