Resumen de Rafael de Castillo Cuesta y la Guerra de África (1859-1860): al servicio de la nacionalización de la Unión Liberal

La Guerra de África (1859-1860), desarrollada bajo el Gobierno largo de la Unión Liberal, suscitó un exacerbado nacionalismo español. En la articulación de su relato nacional, unificador y movilizador, participaron infinitud de periodistas, poetas, novelistas, dramaturgos, pintores, escultores, fotógrafos, políticos, religiosos, etc., adscritos o no a las esferas oficiales. Entre ellos destaca el escritor especializado en la novela por entregas Rafael del Castillo Cuesta que, durante el tiempo del conflicto y centradas en su contexto, publicó tres obras, una novela, una historia y una biografía del general Leopoldo O’Donnell. Todas ellas asumen los motivos empleados por la Unión Liberal para justificar la guerra (el honor patrio, la religión católica y la misión civilizadora), y también se inscriben en el nacionalismo cultural y simbólico al que recurre esa formación política. De ahí que podamos considerar a Rafael del Castillo, más que un ideólogo nacionalista, un divulgador del modelo nacional de Unión Liberal.

The African War (1859-1860), which took place during the Long Government of the Liberal Union, gave rise to an exacerbated Spanish nationalism. An infinite number of journalists, poets, novelists, playwrights, painters, sculptors, photographers, politicians, religious figures, etc., whether they belonged to the official spheres or not, took part in the articulation of its unifying and mobilising national narrative. Among them, Rafael del Castillo Cuesta, a writer who specialised in serialised novels, published three works during the conflict: a novel, a historical work and a biography of General Leopoldo O’Donnell. All of them assume the motives used by the Liberal Union to justify the war (patriotic honour, the Catholic religion and the civilising mission), and are also part of the cultural and symbolic nationalism to which this political grouping resorts. Thus, we can consider Rafael del Castillo more than a nationalist ideologist, rather a disseminator of the national model of Unión Liberal.
