    Esta comunicación tratará sobre las diversas minorías étnicas y religiosas que existen, en especial, en Europa oriental. Para empezar, buscaremos definir las nociones de etnia y minoría, e indagaremos en los orígenes de las minorías y la génesis del mosaico europeo. Luego, haremos una breve presentación histórica de los grupos minoritarios religiosos arraigados en ciertos países de Europa del Este. A continuación, trataremos la cuestión del derecho a ser y a existir de estas minorías y la protección que brinda el derecho europeo e internacional, según algunos organismos e instituciones que se ocupan de la cuestión. Finalizaremos con una serie pistas en torno a los problemas y a los desafíos que presenta un multiculturalismo no plenamente integrado en los valores y en el estilo de vida europeos y su repercusión en el futuro modelo de convivencia europea, en la que está en juego, quizás, la existencia misma de la Unión Europea.

    This paper will deal with the various ethnic and religious minorities that exist, in particular, in Eastern Europe. To begin with, we will seek to define the notions of ethnicity and minority, and we will look into the origins of minorities and the genesis of the European mosaic. We will then give a brief historical presentation of the religious minority groups rooted in certain Eastern European countries. We will then address the question of the right to be and to exist of these minorities and the protection provided by European and international law, according to certain bodies and institutions dealing with the issue. We will conclude with a series of hints on the problems and challenges posed by a multiculturalism that is not fully integrated into European values and lifestyles and its repercussions on the future model of European coexistence, in which the very existence of the European Union is perhaps at stake.
