La vocación filológica de Jaime Campmany. Entre el rigor y el desenfado. Análisis de tres ejemplos en su escritura ensayístico-periodística

    Jaime Campmany fue un prolífico escritor cuya mayor parte de su obra literaria transcurrió por las páginas de los periódicos; en las últimas décadas de su trayectoria por las del diario ABC; también fundó y dirigió la revista Época. Muy prontamente, Campmany mostró un gran interés por el lenguaje. Dicho gusto por el idioma castellano, en todas sus variantes, desde el cultismo al vulgarismo, lo metabolizó y siempre se mostró vigilante ante los usos sociales de los distintos vocablos. Asimismo, contribuyó a conformar muchos neologismos que harían fortuna tras ser divulgados en la prensa. Por ello, el objeto de este trabajo será indagar en las claves filológicas de las aportaciones literarias en prensa de este escritor. Se partirá de la hipótesis de que, entre los motivos atendidos en sus escritos periodísticos, Campmany gustó habitualmente de tratar sobre cuestiones lexicológicas, lo que dotaba de una impronta filológica a su columnismo, ya que el abordaje que llevaba a cabo no era meramente lingüístico, sino que, además, en muchos casos, trazaba el itinerario seguido por determinadas palabras, esto es, indagaba al respecto del contexto donde pudo surgir y en los que evolucionó a través del paso del tiempo. Ejemplo de lo antedicho son los escritos de este autor aquí tratados que fueron compilados bibliográficamente en sendos volúmenes: Cartas batuecas (1992), El jardín de las víboras (1996) y Doy mi palabra (1997). Siguiendo un criterio hipotético-deductivo se desentrañan en este artículo los modos filológicos empleados por Jaime Campmany en sus escritos en prensa.

    Jaime Campmany was a prolific writer whose most of his literary work was published in the pages of newspapers; in the last decades of his career in the ABC newspaper; he also founded and directed the magazine Época. From an early age Campmany showed a great interest in language. The object of this work will be to investigate the philological keys of the literary contributions in the press of this writer. This will be our hypothesis: Campmany metabolized this taste for the Castilian language, in all its variants, from cultism to vulgarism, and was always vigilant about the social uses of different words. Likewise, he contributed to the creation of many neologisms that would become successful after their dissemination in his press tribune. Among the subjects covered in his journalistic writings, Campmany often liked to deal with lexicological issues, which gave a philological imprint to his columnism, since the approach he took was not merely linguistic, but also, in many cases, he traced the itinerary followed by certain words, that is, he inquired about the context in which they may have arisen and in which they evolved over time. An example of the afore mentioned are the writings of this author that were bibliographically compiled in two volumes: Cartas batuecas (1992), El jardín de las víboras (1996) and Doy mi palabra (1997). With a hypothetical-deductive method we will observe the philological work of Campmany in the newspaper.
