Ueda Shizuteru wrote a philosophical commentary on Kuoan’s version of the Ten Ox Pictures. This commentary serves to highlight Ueda’s view of the self and understanding of mysticism. At odds with commentaries popular in other Buddhist traditions, Ueda’s reading does reflect the Tendai concept of “buddha-nature” pervasive in many Japanese Buddhist traditions. One of the central features of Ueda’s interpretation is his use of Buber’s I-and-Thou. This paper will show how Ueda’s commentary highlights his own philosophy and will probe how his use of the I-andThou to interpret the Ten Ox Pictures discloses a central contribution these pictures make to our understanding of consciousness.
