This chapter uses the Shikoku pilgrimage in Japan to describe and analyse the importance of pilgrimage transactions for pilgrimage development. It is argued that pilgrims' transactions are central to the heritage identity and management of successful modern pilgrimage, as well as significant for regional economic growth. The Shikoku pilgrimage's history and the typical Japanese pilgrimage transactions are described to provide the necessary background for the chapter's arguments.
