    Adverbial connectives such as It. quindi, cioè, invece, per/ad esempio, tuttavia, infatti, insomma, in particolare accept both a sentential use – whereby the sequence p conn q is realized within a single Utterance – and a textual use – whereby p belongs to a different Utterance than the one containing conn q. This paper, based on a sampling of 823 examples, explores the criteria that lead to the choice of either form of expression in written language. It is argued that two classes of factors are involved: syntactic-informational factors, concerning the internal structure of the Utterance containing p conn q; and textual factors, concerning the semantic-pragmatic relationship that the sequence p conn q holds with the context.

    Les connecteurs adverbiaux, tels que quindi, cioè, invece, per/ad esempio, tuttavia, infatti, insomma, in particolare, acceptent à la fois un emploi phrastique – où la séquence p conn q est réalisée à l’intérieur d’un seul Énoncé – et un emploi textuel – où p appartient à un Énoncé différent de celui qui contient conn q. Cet article, basé sur un échantillon de 823 exemples, explore les critères qui conduisent au choix de l’une ou de l’autre forme d’expression dans la langue écrite. Il est soutenu que deux classes de facteurs sont impliquées: des facteurs syntaxiques-informationnels, concernant la structure interne de l’Énoncé contenant p conn q; et des facteurs textuels, concernant la relation sémantico-pragmatique que la séquence p conn q entretient avec le contexte.
