Se han seleccionado para este trabajo cuatro pioneros británicos que fotografiaron España y Portugal en las décadas de 1840 y 1850. El médico Claudius Galen Wheelhouse visitó ambos países brevemente durante un recorrido en yate por el Mediterráneo fotografiando recuerdos para incluir en un álbum conmemorativo. En la misma época, el viticultor y comerciante, Joseph James Forrester elaboraba mapas de navegación del río Duero entre Oporto y la frontera de España a partir de algunas de sus fotografías del río y sus alrededores. Frederick William Flower, también comerciante de vinos de Oporto, fotografió la ciudad y alrededores ofreciendo una visión moderna y única dela misma. Y por último, el ingeniero William Atkinson extiende su imagen fotográfica de España, más allá de las obras de construcción del ferrocarril para incluir lugares, personas y costumbres.

For this paper I have selected four British pioneers who photographed Spain and Portugal in the1840’s and 1850’s. Claudius Galen Wheelhouse, a doctor, stopped off in both countries during ayacht voyage round the Mediterranean to photograph reminders of the trip for an album. At more orless the same time, the wine grower and merchant, Joseph James Forrester was making navigationmaps of the Douro river between Oporto and the Spanish border, using photographs made duringhis excursions. Frederick William Flower, also a wine merchant living in Oporto, photographed thecity and its surroundings, offering us a unique and modern vision. And finally, the engineer WilliamAtkinson, extends his photographic image of Spain beyond the railway construction works to include places, people, customs and traditions.
