This paper aims to provide an analysis of all the passages in Apuleius’ works that refer to apophatic discourse and it tries to give an interpretation of the role that apophatic discourse plays in Apuleius’ vision of the Supreme God. The main idea suggested in the article is that Apuleius had already shaped his apophatic vision of God when he wrote the Apologia in 158 C.E. and that this vision, present in all his works, reaches its most accomplished form in the mysterious third initiation in the eleventh book of the Metamorphoses.
