Las ruinas de Begastri son conocida desde antiguo. Ya a mediados del siglo XVII Martín de Ambel y Bernard hablaba de restos constrictivos de cierta entidad en el Cabezo Roenas. Pero será en 1878 cuando Aureliano Fernández Guerra se atrevió a localizar la ciudad de Begastri en las inmediaciones de Cehegín basándose en el ara votiva que hacer referencia a la Res publica Begastresium. Las campañas arqueológicas las comenzó el profesor González Blanco en el s. XX. Desde entonces las campañas de excavación no se han detenido permitiendo documentar la historia del yacimiento y la función de las diversas estructuras.
The ruins of Begastri have been known since ancient times. Already in the middle of the XVII century, Martín de Ambel and Bernard spoke of constrictive remains of a certain entity in the Cabezo Roenas. But it will be in 1878 when Aureliano Fernández Guerra dared to locate the city of Begastri in the vicinity of Cehegin based on the votive altar that refers to the Res publica Begastresium. The archaeological campaigns were started by Professor Gonzalez Blanco in the s. XX. Since then, the excavation campaings have not stopped allowing the history of the site and the function of the various structures to be documented.
