    La alta mortalidad infantil y, en general, la fragilidad de la vida han hecho que a lo largo de los siglos los seres humanos hayan confiado su destino y protección a diferentes deidades, fuerzas de la naturaleza u objetos cargados de una especial fuerza protectora. La sociedad romana no fue una excepción y confió en la ayuda de diferentes talismanes para evitar que la mala suerte, el mal de ojo, la envidia o el infortunio se acercaran a sus hijos y los pusieran en peligro. De todos ellos, hubo uno que destacó especialmente por ser el protector de niños y adolescentes, los más vulnerables ante enfermedades y accidentes, y que acabaría por convertirse en el símbolo de la infancia en Roma: la bulla.

    The high mortality and, in general, the weakness of life made throughout the centuries, the human beings trusted their destiny and protection on diferent deities, forces of nature or objects touched with a special protective strenght. Roman society was not an exception, and entrusted that the help of the diferent talismans could avoid that the misfortune, the evil eye, the envy or the death bringing closer their children and put them at risk. Between all of the them there is one standing out specially since it was the protector of children and teenagers, the most vulnerable members of Roman society to illnesses and accidents, and that eventually ended up as the symbol of the childhood in Ancient Rome: the bulla.
