Resumen de Assessing civic statistics’ components in prospective Primary teachers

Elena Molina Portillo, José Miguel Contreras García, Francisco Martinez Ortiz, Felipe Ruz

  • The interpretation of statistical graphs used in daily press is part of statistical literacy that any citizen must have in order to function properly in society. Nowadays, this culture applied to understanding of social phenomena is called civic statistics. We address the problem that primary school teachers who teach mathematics, in addition to having this culture, must be trained to develop it in their students. In this paper, we evaluate the graph comprehension and the critical stance of 75 Spanish primary teachers when facing news with statistical information. The results show that the group has difficulties in reaching accurate conclusions when analysing this news item.
