    Bab Agnaou, the ceremonial door of the Qaṣba of Marrakech (late XIIth century), is apparently a well-known historical monument, and the archaeological investigations of which it has been the object, insinuate that it was examined under all its seams, and that if there are any dark spots left, it does not affect its interpretation. However, the problem here is independent of the number of investigations; what matters most is the lack of systematic soundings either above or underground. During the period 2019-2022, Bab Agnaou has undergone major restoration work, which has justified two excavation operations preceded and accompanied by occasional observations.

    Their objective was to identify the chrono-stratigraphic context at the scale of the monumental gate and its bordering zone, to better understand its spatial organization, its function in its original state and the roles that fell to it through the history and finally to provide a guarantee of reliability to the restoration project. The results obtained have already provided a considerable harvest of archaeological information; yet a preliminary assessment is necessary

    Bab Agnaou, la porte d’apparat de la Qaṣba de Marrakech (fin XIIème siècle) est, en apparence, un monument historique bien connu, et les investigations archéologiques dont il a fait l’objet, insinuent qu’il a été examiné sous toutes ses coutures, et que s’il reste des points obscurs, cela n’a pas d’incidence sur son appréhension. Or, le problème est ici indépendant du nombre d’investigations; ce qui compte le plus est le manque de sondages systématiques ni en élévation ni en sous-sol.

    Durant la période 2019-2022, Bab Agnaou a subi d’importants travaux de restauration qui ont justifié deux opérations de fouille précédées et accompagnées par des observations ponctuelles. Elles avaient pour objectif de cerner le contexte chrono-stratigraphique à l’échelle de la porte monumentale et de sa zone limitrophe, de mieux appréhender son organisation spatiale, son fonctionnement dans son état d’origine et les rôles qui lui incombaient à travers l’histoire et enfin d’apporter au projet de restauration un gage de fiabilité. Les résultats obtenus ont déjà fourni une moisson considérable d’informations archéologiques. Un bilan préliminaire s’impose
