Resumen de The concept of open innovation in digital technologies in fact-checking platforms

Carlos Eduardo Franciscato, Ana Laura Farias Gonçalves

  • The first fact-checking initiatives took place in the journalistic field in the 2000s in the United States (Graves, 2013), with the aim of locating and verifying errors or falsehoods in the contents in circulation, as well as producing and publicizing corrections. These verifications adopt journalistic standards for checking and have expanded in the environment of of information technology and communication in digital networks, which requires an operational capacity in line with a logic of continuous innovation in processes, products, markets and social demands. Using the multiple case study methodology (Yin, 2001), we investigated three fact-checking initiatives that adopt the organizational model of verification platforms in South America - two in Brazil (Lupa and Aos Fatos) and one in Argentina (Chequeado). All are references in their countries: Lupa and Aos Fatos are the largest fact-checking agencies in Brazil, while Chequeado, opened in 2010, is the pioneer in Latin America. Another point in common is that they have a considerably innovative profile in the journalistic field. These organizations are emerging actors in relation to traditional media, as they create stricter verification procedures for journalistic practices by creating more rigorous procedures for verifying journalistic practices. This scientific research was directed to the study of the technological innovations of these three fact-checking projects in data tracking and visualization tools. One of the challenges is the automation of checks using robots such as Chequeabot, by Chequeado (Graves, 2018). The true innovation capacity of these platforms in the journalistic field was examined under the category «open innovation», investigating the ways in which these organizations developed their own technological tools or obtained them in external partnerships, networks, specific collaborations and open source software on the internet (Chesbrough, 2017).
