Recent ostracoda of the Malacca straits. Part I

    • A systematic and quantitative study has been made of the Ostracoda based on 18 bottom samples from the Malacca Straits. From a total of 129 species, 22 species and 2 genera (Bythocytheropteron and Alataconcha) are described as new. Ostracod abundance and diversity appears to be principally controlled by substrate type; highest values occur in association with medium to coarse sand rich in organic debris and lower values with gravels and those sands poor in carbonate and dominated by quartz. Two assemblages were recognized in terms of faunal composition: the shallower southern on is characterized by Foveoleberis cypraeoides, Hemikrithe peterseni, Keijia labyrinthica, Keijella multisulcus and high incidence of Cytherelloidea leroyi, Neocytheretta snellii and N. spongiosa, the deeper northern one is distinguished by Abrocythereis guangdongensis, Bythoceratina paiki, Bythocytheropteron alatum, Bradleya andamanae, Cytheropteron rhombiforme, C. parasinense, C. malaccaense, Keijella paucipunctata, Rugieria indopacifica and Stigmatocythere parakingmai. An analysis and comparison shows that a high degree of faunal mixing occurs in the Malacca Straits which reveals its close zoogeographical relationship with the South China Sea, Indonesia, and the northern coast of the Indian Ocean.
