French civil engineering contractors have played a major role in the infrastructural equipment of Portugal. Their activity in this field took off in the middle of the 19th century, particularly in the sector of bridge construction and that of harbour engineering, most notably through the efforts of Gustave Eiffel and Edmond Bartissol. Most conspicuous was the work of Hersent, the firm which, in the years from 1888 to 1930, provided the port of Lisbon with modern facilities and infrastructures, and was even granted the concession for operating the port, in 1894- 1907. In the 20th century, project carried out by French firms proved no less numerous, whether in the realm ofrailway or of harbour construction, or in the field of electrical plants and large dams -the chosen spaciality of SEOP, a subsidiary of the Fougerolle group.

Les entrepreneurs français de travaux publics ont joué urn rôle important dans l' équipement des infrastructures. Cette activité s'amorça des le milieu du XlX siêcle, notamment dans le domaine des ponts et dans celui des ports, grâce notamment à Gustave Eiffel et à Edmond Bartissol. Particuliêrement considérable fut l' activité de l'entreprise Hersent qui, entre 1888 et 1930, dota le port de Lisbonne d'infrastructures modernes et en exploita même la concession de 1894 à 1907. Au XX siêcle, les réalisations françaises ne furent pas moins nombreuses tant dans le domaine ferroviaire et dans celui des ports que dans ceux des installations électriques et des grands barrages, spécialité d'élection de la SEOP, filiale du groupe Fougerolle.
