Absolutismo reformista e nacionalismo: as negociações para substituir o tratado de 1810 entre Portugal e a Inglaterra em 1824-1826.

    It has long been ignored that the substitution of the 1810 treaty of commerce and navigation was envisaged by D. João VI, the head of state who had signed it in Rio deJaneiro. In fact, the build up to the date set for the revision, the year of 1825, was preceeded by systematic efforts on the Portuguese side which led to the elaboration of a new treaty project. Rejected completely by the British Government, the negotiations were interrupted some time later due to the King's death and the ensuing dynastic and political crisis, and this episode remained forgotten until the author discovered the «dossier» about this question. It's an episode which illustrates the feebleness of the Portuguese State at the time, its inability to stand up to the power of Britain, reflected in the failure of the nationalist movement which involved high officials and the industrial and business circles during the absolutist period of 1824-1826, in a continuous link, from that point of view, with the preceeding years of liberalism.

    On a longtemps ignoré que Ia substitution du traité de commerce et navigation de 1810 a été envisagé par D. João VI. le chef d'État que l'avait signé à Rio de Janeiro. En fait, ('approche de la date prévue pour la révision, l'année de 1825, a été précedée de systématiques démarches du côté portugais, qu'ont abouti à l'élaboration d'un nouveau projet de traité. Réjeté sans plus par le gouvernement britannique, les négociations interrompues un peu plus tard par la mort du Roi et la crise dynastique et politique qui s'ensuivit, cet épisode resta oublié jusqu'à que l'auteur trouva le dossier sur cette question. C'est un épisode qui illustre la faiblesse de l'État portugais à l'époque, san incapacité de faire face à la puissance britannique, que si traduisit par l'échec du mouvement nationaliste qui envoüta haut fonctionalisme, milieu indutriel et milieu d'affaires pendant la période absolutiste de 1824-1826, dans un lien de continuité avec les années précêdentes de libéralisme.
