  • Igualmente completos y útiles resultan los dos ensayos de Williamson, en donde se sostiene que "the source of the book's literary power-and the key to its modernity-can be found in the unique and special madness of Don Quixote" (88), así como que "The fundamental critical challenge lies [...] in accounting for the intentions as they might have evolved in the making of Don Quixote' (91). No faltan tampoco juicios de valor muy personales y algún que otro desafío: si algo queda aún por tratar a fondo, según el hispanista británico, son los últimos quince capítulos de la novela, habiendo recibido "very patchy, inconsistent critical attention, when they have not simply been overlooked" (137). Semejante elogio recibe el alcalaíno de Barry Ife, quien en su excelente capítulo considera las Novelas ejemplares como "the greatest achievement of Spain's greatest writer at the height of his powers" (252), "examples rather than exemplary, working models of human nature and human behaviour" (254). Siguiendo esta estela, propone entonces "a compendium of the topic to serve as a guide to future Cervantistas by synthesizing various sociohistorical approaches to understanding madness in sixteenth-century Spanish society" (297).
