    The history of the words liberal and liberalism and the usages that were made in the Portuguese context share, as expected, many of the lines that are detectable in other scenarios. If you seek for specifics, perhaps they can be found, firstly, in the greater persistence of the old sense of liberality, in the fact that it was not the word (Liberal) that served as the primary identifier to those who were opposed to Realist/Absolutist and, finally, in the fact that only belated and partially, although on a consistent basis, those words have been connected to a different policy doctrine of the emerging democracy.

    Comme on pouvait s’y attendre, l’histoire des mots « libéral » et « libéralisme » n’a rien de spécifique au contexte portugais. Les éventuels particularismes peuvent être décelés dans la plus grande persistance de l’ancien sens de libéralité, le terme « libéral » n’ayant pas servi de principal élément d’identification pour ceux qui s’opposaient aux royalistes/absolutistes. Ce fut seulement tardivement et partiellement, bien que de façon consistante, que ces mots furent associés à une doctrine politique différente de la démocratie émergente.

    A história das palavras liberal e liberalismo e dos usos que delas se fizeram no contexto Português partilha, como é espectável, muitos dos traços detectáveis em outros cenários. Se se procurarem as especificidades,talvez as mesmas se possam encontrar, em primeiro lugar, na maior persistência do antigo sentido de liberalidade, no facto de não ter sido o termo (liberal) que serviu de principal elemento de identificação aos que se opunham aos realistas/absolutistas e, por fim, no facto de só tardia e parcialmente, embora de forma consistente, as referidas palavras se terem associado a uma doutrina política diversa da democracia emergente.
