    Menéndez y Pelayo elogió las CANTIGAS como "la Biblia estética del siglo XIII". 420 componen el corpus poético-musical que conocemos como CANTIGAS DE SANTA MARÍA, más un poema introductorio y un Prólogo también en verso. Alfonso X proyectó representar el contenido de las cantigas narrativas por medio de unas 2.640 miniaturas, de las cuales llegaron a realizarse dos tercios aproximadamente.

    Se trata de una de las más originales y destacadas obras culturales de la Edad Media, por sus méritos literarios (lo que el autor llama "contar", "trovar" y "rimar"), por su méritos musicales ("fazer sôes") y por sus miniaturas ilustrativas ("pintar").

    Menéndez y Pelayo praised CANTIGAS as "the aesthetic Bible of the thirteenth century." 420 make up the poetic-musical corpus that we know as CANTIGAS DE SANTA MARÍA, plus an introductory poem and a Prologue also in verse. Alfonso X planned to represent the content of the narrative cantigas by means of some 2,640 miniatures, of which approximately two thirds were produced.

    It is one of the most original and outstanding cultural works of the Middle Ages, for its literary merits (what the author calls ìtellingî, ìtrovarî and ìrhymingî), for its musical merits ("fazer sôes") and for its illustrative miniatures ("painting").
