    En el texto se aborda una de las mayores dificultades, si no la mayor, en aquel tipo de viajes, y en éste en particular, por su duración: el mantenimiento de la tripulación, cuestión sobre la que tuvieron que improvisar. Dificultades que empezaban con el avituallamiento de las naves, la elección de los mejores bastimentos, la capacidad de almacenamiento y conservación, etc., así como la incertidumbre, no solo por dirigirse hacia lo desconocido, sino también por los hipotéticos cabotajes que les permitieran reabastecerse y acostumbrarse al consumo de productos desconocidos, algunos de los cuales encontraron de su gusto y agrado y otros no; incluso se vieron abocados al consumo de cosas impensables fruto de la necesidad.
