Resumen de Los enconchados de La conquista de México en un museo mexicano ¿Cuadros o biombos? El dilema de un objeto

En el Museo Nacional del Virreinato en México, la exhibición de un “biombo” enconchado de La conquista de México respondía a un simulacro museográfico desde la década de 1980, inconexo con su materialidad e historia. Las cuatro pinturas, integradas por dos tablas cada una, nunca tuvieron la función de autosoporte y articulación característica de estos muebles, ni tampoco la adquirieron cuando se simuló su montaje. En este texto se presenta la investigación histórica y la aportación de información documental inédita respecto a su ubicación y disposición en el Palacio del Infantado en Madrid, a fines del siglo XVIII. La reflexión sobre su materialidad contribuye a comprender la intencionalidad de sus autores, los distintos usos que ha tenido a lo largo de su historia y la comparación con los otros conjuntos similares del mismo tema, con el fin de fundamentar la propuesta de exhibirlos como pinturas exentas en el museo.

In the National Museum of the Viceroyalty in Mexico, a "folding screen" of The Conquest of Mexico was installed as a simulation since the 1980s, unconnected with its material nature and history. The four paintings, made up of two boards each, never had the function of self-support and articulation characteristic of these pieces of furniture, nor did they acquire it when their assembly was simulated. This text presents the historical research and the contribution of unpublished documentary information regarding their location and arrangement in the Infantado Palace in Madrid, at the end of the 18th century. The analysis of its structure contributes to understand the intentionality of its authors, the different uses it has had throughout its history and the comparison with other similar sets of the same subject, in order to support the proposal to exhibit them as separate hanging paintings in the museum.
