Los puertos principales de las islas Canarias han ocupado un lugar central en la jerarquía portuaria regional en África noroccidental desde los inicios de la primera gran reforma portuaria internacional. Esta posición relativa se ha consolidado gracias a las ventajas comparativas del archipiélago, así como por el fortalecimiento de sus principales funciones portuarias, particularmente en aquellas orientadas a los servicios de apoyo a la navegación. En este artículo se realiza un estudio de la posición relativa de los puertos de La Luz-Las Palmas y Santa Cruz de Tenerife en la red de puertos de África noroccidental en el largo plazo. Entre los factores que explican su posicionamiento en la red, se atenderá a la cuestión institucional, pero también a su rápida adaptación a las demandas de la navegación internacional durante el periodo analizado./The main seaports of the Canary Islands led the regional port hierarchy in Northwest Africa since the first international port reform. That relative position has been consolidated thanks to its comparative advantage and the reinforcement of specific port functions, broadly shipping logistics and stopover operations. In this article we explore the relative position of the seaports of La Luz-Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife into the Northwest African port system in the long-run. This article emphasized the role of institutions and technological change and its impact on seaport development during the analyzed period.
