  La hepatitis autoinmune (HAI) es una enfermedad crónica y de curso progresivo. Puede aparecer a cualquier edad y es más frecuente en las mujeres. Presenta una prevalencia del 0,02 % de la población.

  Se cree que puede originarse tras una reacción inmune frente autoantígenos hepatocitarios durante un trastorno de inmunorregulación, desencadenado en personas predispuestas debido a agentes ambientales o sustancias químicas.

  El diagnóstico se basa en cambios histológicos, manifestaciones clínicas compatibles y alteraciones analíticas características.

  En la gran mayoría de los casos la HAI suele responder al tratamiento con prednisona en monoterapia o junto con azatioprina. Con ello se consigue reducir las alteraciones histológicas y aumentar la supervivencia del enfermo.

  Si no existe respuesta al tratamiento farmacológico, en ocasiones el trasplante hepático es una medida efectiva.

  Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic disease having a progressive course. It can appear at any age and is more frequent in women. Its prevalence in the population is 0.02%.

  It is believed that it may originate after an immune reaction against hepatocyte autoantigens during an immunoregulatory disorder, triggered in predisposed people due to environmental agents or chemical substances.

  The diagnosis is based on histological changes, consistent with clinical manifestations and characteristic analytical alterations.

  In the large majority of cases, AIH usually responds to treatment with prednisone in monotherapy or together with azathioprine. This reduces the histological alterations and increases the patient survival.

  If there is no response to the drug treatment, liver transplant sometimes is an effective measure.
