Resumen de Carracci, Ludovisi et Falconieri

Andrea G. De Marchi

  • This study publishes two paintings known only through documentary sources and studied in this perspective. Up to now, they had been considered to be lost. They are works by the Carraccis: an "Annunciation" by Annibale and a "Herodias" by Agostino and Annibale. The latter can be dated around 1589-90 and contributes to a better understanding of these two artists. Both paintings have a distinguished provenance, the Ludovisi Collection, considered the most important of Bolognese art. The same provenance has been traced for other paintings now in the Doria Pamphilj Gallery.

After the Ludovisi ownership, the "Annunciation" was sought by some of the great collectors of the 17th century, notably King Philip IV of Spain, Paolo Francesco Falconieri and the Marquis Niccolo Pallavicini. This painting shown here to be related to a drawing in the Louvre, can be dated around 1593. This was Annibale's very last period in Bologna following his first trip to Rome.
