Resumen de Hypothèses pour le Maestro di Casa Pendaglia de Ferrare

Chiara Guerzi

  • The study focuses on the role played by and aspects of the anonymous Master of the Casa Pendaglia. He was one of the most important painters in the Ferrara of Nicolo III d'Este (1393-1441). The catalogue of his works is reconstituted thanks to the recovery of a basic core of frescoes once part of the decoration of the city palace that was formerly the resicence of the noble Pendaglia family. Today these fragments are preserved in the local Pinacoteca Nazionale. Stylistic evidence points to similarities with the small corpus of works recognized to be by the hand of the Master of the Massari Pièta. He was a painter of Ferrarese culture but his style was also distinguished by unequivocal International intonations. These accents were more modern, akin to International style recalling the work of the contemporary Franco-Burgundian milieu. An area of culture that was important for the d'Este court of the Marquis Nicolo. It is believed that the works of the Master of Massari Pièta provide the clue to his origins: that of an artist from the north but settled in Ferrara.
