Resumen de Juan Ignacio Molina y sus elegías neolatinas sobre la viruela: variaciones criollas de un género clásico

De peste variolarum es un conjunto de doce elegías en el cual el jesuita Juan Ignacio Molina (1740-1829) expone en primera persona su experiencia como enfermo de viruela, abordando las distintas etapas de la enfermedad. El presente artículo se centra en cómo el autor chileno, que junto con la subjetividad del enfermo refleja su interés por el conocimiento médico, adapta el género elegíaco a sus necesidades, incorporando elementos del canon y sus modelos, pero llevándolo simultáneamente por cauces nuevos que incluyen su condición criolla y acercan el texto, incluso, al plano científico.

De peste variolarum is a twelve elegy corpus in which jesuit Juan Ignacio Molina (1740-1829) describes in first person his experience as a smallpox sufferer, adressing with the different stages of the disease. The present article focuses on how the Chilean author, who, together with the patient’s subjectivity, reflects his interest in medical knowledge, adapts the elegiac genre to his needs, incorporating elements from the canon and its models, but at the same time taking it through new channels that include his Creole condition, even bringing the text closer to the scientific field
