Hittite naḫ(ḫ)- ‘to fear’, OIr. nár ‘noble, modest’ and Greek νῶτον ‘back’, Latin natis ‘rump, buttock(s)’

  • It is argued that the Hittite verb naḫ(ḫ)- ‘to fear’ and derivatives like naḫšaratt- ‘fear’ and OIr. nár ‘noble, modest’ are related to Greek νῶτον ‘back’, Lat. natis ‘rumb, buttocks’ based on PIE *neh2- ‘to turn (one’s back)’ which served to denote both the body part turned away from the interlocutor, similar to Lat. dorsum ‘back’, and the emotion ‘fear’ inferrable from the body motion ‘to turn one’s back’, similar to Lat. terga vertō.
