  • With the aim of contrasting the results of plasma membrane functional integrity in fresh semen, were collected serially 5 ejaculates from 10 fertile rams, five West African (WA) and five Santa Ines-WA crossbred. Tests were performed for evaluating the structural integrity (Eosin-Nigrosin stain: EN) and functional (HOS-t) of the plasma membrane (MP) individually (EN and HOS-t) and combined (HOST-EN). The data were analysed by GLM procedure. Results showed that genotype had relatively similar characteristics concerning structural and functional integrity of MP. Structural integrity was assessed using EN, comparing specimens WA y SI-WA crossbreds, differences were not statistically significant (P0.05) in the percentage of viability: 87.44% vs 83.92%, respectively. Also, to assess the functionality of MP with HOS-t, both genotypes were similar in response to osmotic change (WA: 58.89% vs SI-WA: 55.86%. P0.05). Interestingly, it was evident that both genotypes had similar characteristics of vitality and resistance to osmotic changes in fresh semen, deducing adaptation to dry tropic conditions inherent in the reproductive performance of ram, especially if WA is taken as control group adapted
