    La innovación social es un tema que toma auge en Ecuador a partir de la necesidad del país de encontrar aliados para poder enfrentar el amplio margen de población que vive en situación de vulnerabilidad socioeconómica. La Universidad, se convierte en un impulsor estratégico para alcanzar este objetivo del Estado. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo describir cómo el enfoque de la innovación social se convierte en un mecanismo de articulación de las tres funciones sustantivas de la Universidad: docencia, investigación y vinculación con la sociedad. Se aplica un estudio de carácter exploratorio, mediante el uso del Método Bibliográfico Documental. Se concluye que la innovación social requiere de la articulación de las tres funciones sustantivas universitarias: la academia, como transmisora de conocimiento; la investigación, como productora de ese conocimiento; y la vinculación con la comunidad, como el instrumento que permite responder a las necesidades particulares de las comunidades a partir de ese conocimiento.

    Social innovation is an issue that is booming in Ecuador based on the country’s need to find allies to be able to face the wide margin of the population living in a situation of socioeconomic vulnerability. The University becomes a strategic driver to achieve this objective of the State. This research aims to describe how the approach to social innovation becomes a mechanism for articulating the three substantive functions of the University: teaching, research and linkage with society.

    An exploratory study is applied, using the Documentary Bibliographic Method. It is concluded that social innovation requires the articulation of the three university substantive functions: the academy, as a transmitter of knowledge; research, as a producer of this knowledge; and the link with the community, as the instrument that allows to respond to the needs of the communities from that knowledge.
