In this work, a new application for variational mode decomposition (VMD) is proposed to identify frequencies on an input signal, simulated numerically. The recent advances in the use of this technique have promoted its application in different areas of science. The present work applies VDM to identify the central dynamics in a non-linear dynamical system modeling the evolution of flutter in-flight testing, an aerodynamic instability that produces undesirable effects, and that can even lead to the aircraft destruction. This work presents a first step in the search of new methods that can reduce logistics costs in real flight testing experiments. The results of the present work are compared with the modal analysis obtained with the open-source solver NeoCASS. The method described in this article provides fast and accurate results compared to other methods already used in the field of flight testing.
