Resumen de Efecto de la forma de distribución de concentrado y paja (por separado o en forma de mezcla) sobre la fermentación ruminal en terneros de cebo intensivo

  • The effect of offering the concentrate and the straw separately (separate) or together as a total mixed ration (TMR) on rumen fermentation (rumen pH and ammonia, lactic acid and volatile fatty acid – VFA – concentrations) and feed intake pattern of ten intensively reared calves was studied in a two 42-day periods experiment, following a change-over arrangement. The proportion of straw included in total mixed ration on each period varied from 8 to 10%, according to previous experiments. No differences on feed intake pattern were promoted (11.19 vs. 10.74 kg FM for separate and TMR distribution, respectively, P>0.10), although separate distribution reduced the intake of straw (5 and 7% in first and second period). Animals fed the total mixed ration showed a more buffered rumen fermentation, characterised by higher daily mean rumen pH (6.09 vs. 5.87, P<0.001),ammonia concentration (110 vs. 89.0 mg/l, P<0.001) and acetic to propionic ratio (1,52 vs.1.07, P<0.001) and lower total VFA concentration (92.9 vs 104 mmol/l, P=0.008), as well as less observations indicative of acidosis – pH<5.6 (14 vs. 37%) and total VFA>150mM (6.3 vs. 9.4%) – compared to those fed the concentrate and straw separately. In view of the results, feeding the diet as a total mixed ration might be interesting to prevent acidosis.
