  • Twenty merino lambs (6 to 8 weeks, 14.8 kg; n = 10 per group) were used to study the effect of pelleted total mixed rations with different feed particle size distribution (Control diet: 13.5 % of the feed particles > 1.7 mm; Alternative diet: 47.1% of particles > 1.7 mm) on animal performance, blood acid-base status (pH, pCO2, HCO3-, anion gap) and carcass characteristics (carcass weight, chilling losses, dressing percentage and proportion of commercial cuts) of fattening lambs. Lambs were fed the corresponding diet ad libitum and slaughtered when they reached 27 kg. Dry matter intake was higher in the control than in the alternative diet group (P<0.05). However, no differences were observed in feed to gain conversion rate, blood parameters and carcass characteristics. It was concluded that is possible to fatten lambs using total mixed rations pelleted made either with cereal grains ground with 2 mm or 6 mm before pelleting.
