  • Food aversion (AV) can be induced by taste, odour and flavour (taste and odour). The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of 2 breeds of sheep (Manchega, n = 10; Lacaune, n = 10) to generalize the induced aversion against a concentrate with strawberry or carob chocolate odour to barley and grass. Ewes were allocated into 2 groups/breed and treatments consisted in: Control (water) and Aversion (225 mg LiCl/kg BW). Aversion was induced in 3 d, redosing when intake >75 g. Manchega ewes showed stronger neophobia than Lacaune, and both breeds preferred strawberry to carob chocolate odour. On d6, 100 g of concentrated, barley and grass with strawberry odour were offered individually during 5 min each food. The 80% of the animals needed at least 2 LiCl doses to establish aversion. Intoxication for LiCl was observed in 2 ewes and no consecutive dosing is recommended. Generalization of the aversion towards barley and grass with strawberry odour was not achieved. In conclusion, no breed differences were observed in aversion behaviour but difficulty was greater when a known food was used. Odour (without taste cues) did no allow the aversion generalization.
