Austeridad, suntuosidad y aniconismo: tres pilares de la espiritualidad cristiana emeritense durante el periodo tardoantiguo

    En el presente artículo se repasan tres aspectos que, conjuntamente, se considera que podrían haber caracterizado la espiritualidad de la ciudad de Mérida durante la Antigüedad tardía: la austeridad en la dimensión humana, la suntuosidad en el ámbito religioso y, finalmente, el aniconismo en las representaciones ligadas a este último. Para ello se coteja una importante fuente literaria del periodo (las Vidas de los Santos Padres Emeritenses) con toda una serie de testimonios materiales aportados por la arqueología, en su mayoría asociados a las colecciones del Museo Nacional de Arte Romano.

    In the present article three aspects are reviewed that, together, it is considered that could have characterized the spirituality of the city of Merida during late antiquity:

    the austerity in the human dimension, the sumptuousness in the religious sphere and, finally, the aniconism in the representations related to the latter. This is done by cross analysing an important literary source for the period (the Vitas Sanctorum Patrum Emeritensium) with a range of material evidence provided by archeology, mostly associated with the collections of the National Museum of Roman Art.
